CantBuyDeem is new to me but clearly been rapping and representing for Chicago for a minute. CDs, DVDs, LOOSE SQUARES, Vol. 2 is my first introduction to Deem so I wasn’t sure what it would be. A blend of hard hitting street beats and bars with a dash of more personal, emotional/relationship type songs. Plenty here as this cracks an hour so let’s dive in. .
CantBuyDeem hits track one running and rarely lets up. Dilla & Yuuuh start things off stringing and give you an introduction to the heights that Deem can hit. Lame 2 Me slows things down but doesn’t turn down Deems intensity. U So Crazy, Big Difference & New Witnesses all go off and get better each step deeper into the album. Boyz In The Hood was the first song that I had to have grow on me on this album, one that I like but there are parts of it I’m less into. YGMFU is about halfway through the album and one of my top tracks, it’s short and one I wish had another CantBuyDeem verse on but that’s alright. .
The second half of this album has a couple songs that I like a little less like No Emotions, Grab Her Booty and Himmys & Hermiones. Not songs Deem was bad on but just ones that had a vibe I didn’t get into as much. There’s also a lot of features here, and not all I love. I would have rather had more Deem than a couple features here but it is a long project so end out a little. .
I really like this and really like CantBuyDeem. This is for sure the kind of project that hooks me and gets me wanting to listen to more of the back catalog and I’m pretty sure he has a new project dropping November 18th! So I’ll have to tune in and catch that for sure!
