Behind the Stripes: A Conversation with Pro Wrestling Referee Chris Massie

By Fab 94.5 The Hitz Staff

In the wild, unpredictable world of professional wrestling, the spotlight often shines on high-flying athletes and charismatic superstars—but just as vital to the action is the figure in black and white. Today on Fab 94.5 The Hitz, we highlight the man who keeps it all together in the ring: referee Chris Massie.

From Camera Operator to Ring Authority

Chris’s wrestling journey began in 2002, behind the scenes—running cameras and music for local shows. But by 2008, he stepped into the ring himself.

“I grew up wanting to be a wrestler,” Massie says. “But being a referee was just a better fit for me.”

Calm Under Pressure

Massie’s first night officiating wasn’t filled with nerves like you’d expect.

“I remember being calm,” he recalls. “It helped that I was surrounded by friends I’d known for years.”

What Fans Don’t See

Referees don’t always get the credit they deserve. Massie notes that fans often blame refs when things don’t go as expected—even when it’s beyond their control.

Bumps, Bruises, and Scratching the Itch

While he’s no stranger to the occasional bump, Massie enjoys those moments.

“Taking a bump here and there scratches that itch I had growing up,” he admits.

“Come On Walgreens!”

One of Massie’s wildest moments happened when his day job followed him to the ring.

“A fan yelled ‘Come on Walgreens!’ after a 2-count,” he laughs. “They recognized me from work—miles away from home.”

Legends and Loyalty

He cites Sean Waltman (X-Pac) as a career highlight.

“In 2010, I got to ref three of his matches on a tour. He’s my all-time favorite.”

Every promotion he’s worked for, Massie says, has taken a chance on him—and he’s forever grateful for those opportunities.

Preparation Is Everything

Massie treats every show, big or small, with equal respect.

“It could be someone’s debut or a fan’s first time. Every show matters.”

Physically, he emphasizes the importance of stretching and staying ready.

Stay Alert. Stay Safe.

Despite being in the middle of the chaos, Massie’s never sustained serious injuries.

“The key is awareness. Know your surroundings and stay out of the way.”

For Aspiring Refs

His message to newcomers?

“Be patient. Jump on any opportunity that comes your way. Show promotions you’re the one to call next time.”

Chris Massie isn’t just a referee—he’s a ring general, a communicator, and the silent force that keeps the show running smoothly. Stay tuned to Fab 94.5 The Hitz for more stories from the people making wrestling and entertainment happen behind the scenes.
