Congratulations to Mr. Richard Nunley on 40 Years of Service Through Music and Mentorship

It’s hard to put into words the true impact of a man like Mr. Nunley.

Yes, he’s been a musical force at Kenwood Academy for decades. Yes, he’s built a choir program that reached national stages, touched the hearts of thousands, and set a high standard for musical excellence in Chicago Public Schools. But for those of us who were blessed to be taught by him, it was deeper than music.

Before Kenwood, let’s not forget Dunbar Vocational Career Academy — where many of us first experienced the brilliance of his teaching. His presence there shaped generations. I’m proud to say I was one of them. Dunbar Class of 2003 will always carry your lessons with us, Mr. Nunley.

You didn’t just teach us notes, harmonies, and rhythm. You taught us confidence. Discipline. Leadership. Respect. You pulled greatness out of us — even when we didn’t see it in ourselves. You didn’t just help build musicians. You helped raise mighty men and women.

You’ve created a legacy far beyond the choir room. A legacy that echoes in every concert hall, classroom, and studio your former students now lead. You have truly lived out what it means to serve through your gift.

From Dunbar to Kenwood, and beyond — your work has mattered. And it will keep resonating for decades to come.

Thank you, Mr. Nunley. For your music. For your time. For your spirit. And for never letting us settle for less than greatness.

With all respect and gratitude,

Dunbar Vocational Career Academy, Class of 2003
