“She Really Said 2Piece Like It Was On the Menu…” A 4th of July Exclusive by GerryPThaDJ

Let me walk you through the moment I officially logged off from reality.
So I’m on the phone with my first niece, Zoraida. We’re locking in plans for the 4th of July. She’s checking to see if I’m available to DJ the family function. Sound system, playlist, vibes, all the real-deal Bootcamp Radio energy—because if I’m on the ones and twos, it’s gonna feel like a block party in every direction.
We’re talkin’ through the details, then outta nowhere she says:
“Unc… you not gonna believe what Zamiya just said.”
Now let me paint the picture. Zamiya is Zoraida’s daughter. That makes her my great-niece. She’s seventeen, smart, stylish, and full of bold opinions she’ll argue all the way through, even when she’s dead wrong. The type of teenager that’ll confidently tell you the sky is teal if the lighting hits just right.
Zoraida says,
“We were talking about that R&B group from Chicago—3Piece—and Zamiya jumps in like, ‘Oh yeah, I know them. They’re called 2Piece.’”
I had to pause the whole phone call. Not slow it down—completely stop. Silence on my end. I needed time to recover from what I had just heard.
I said:
“She called them what?”
Zoraida was already laughing because she knew how this was about to go. She said,
“Yeah, 2Piece. She said it like it was facts. Her logic was, since one of the members passed away, there’s only two left, so now it’s 2Piece.”
This girl didn’t just say the wrong name. She renamed a whole R&B group like she worked in branding at a record label. Full rebrand. Like she sat in on the meeting and signed off on the rollout.
At that moment, I couldn’t even respond. I laughed so hard I had to get up and walk around the room. This wasn’t just wrong—it was diabolical. She said it with so much confidence, I started questioning if maybe the group really had changed names and nobody told me.
Let me set the record straight:
The group is called 3Piece.
Chicago legends. Real harmonies. Smooth vocals. Songs that made people sit still and reflect on love they never had. 3Piece is not a meal. It’s not a fast food combo. It’s a whole mood, a moment, a sound that belongs to the city.
But Zamiya?
She said it like she knew them personally. Like she was in the group chat when they voted on the new name. Like she ran marketing.
I said,
“Zoraida, your daughter is out here rewriting R&B history with no remorse. If she tells me next that Jagged Edge is called ‘Two Corners,’ I’m turning my mic off.”
So now, every time I hear 3Piece, I hear her voice in the back of my mind talking about,
“It’s 2Piece now, Uncle. Let it go.”
No. I will not.
Moral of the story?
Let the new generation speak. Let them be bold. But correct them before they start teaching it to their friends.
This Fourth of July, when you’re playing the classics, play them right. Respect the names. And don’t let nobody tell you 3Piece came with two sides and a drink.
